Installation
When eating dinner, very rarely do we stop to think about where our food came from. We look at labels such as "organic" and "natural" and sometimes even the country from where it was imported. Florida provides 80 percent of the tomatoes in the united states. That means that there are hundreds of people who harvest this food for a living. The majority of the workers are from Immokalee, Florida and most of them are undocumented or are contract workers which means that they are given a set paycheck. It also means, cheap labor. Each type of tomato (and many other vegetable and fruits as well) are paid by the bucket. For each bucket of tomatoes, a worker is paid 60 cents, meaning that they have to fill approximately 80 five-galleon buckets to make minimum wage. The purpose of this installation was to start a conversation and to make the viewers aware that sometimes what we take for granted, such as food, comes at the expense of someone else.
